rev. 1.00 5 november 07, 2011 HT7A4016 application information operation overview the HT7A4016 is a low power , wide temperature range general purpose current mode pwm controller . the device is designed to require a minimum of external components for dif ferent power circuit topologies such as primary-side feedback flyback and dc-dc buck/boost. the device can be used for led driving applications such as led backlights and led lighting. t o meet led constant current requirements, t he d evice c an m aintain a l ow c urrent tolerance of 1% for led driving applications. under voltage lockout (uvlo) a uvl o c omparator i s p rovided t o e nsure t hat t he device is fully functional before the output stage is enabled. as shown in figure 5, hysteresis is provided to prevent t he pw m cont roller from shutt ing down during any voltage dips which might occur during the startup process. the turn-on and turn-of f threshold levels are set at 16.0v and 10.0v, respectively. figure 5 uvlo scheme and start-up current current sense and leading-edge blanking (leb) for is olation f lyback applications , a leading- edge bl anking sc heme i s ne cessary. a l eading- edge blanking scheme is integrated in the device to prevent f alse t riggering d ue t o f eedback c urrent sp ikes which may appear on the cs pin. this eliminates the need for the usual r-c flter which is normally a requirement in typical current mode pwm controller applications. figure 6 leb with r-c filter removed internal slope-compensation an i mportant i ssue wi th c urrent m ode c ontrol schemes is instability due to sub-harmonic oscillation when the duty-cycle > 50%. t o prevent this problem from occurring, a slope-compensation function is always necessary . in traditional current mode controller applications, many external components are necessary to implement a slope-compensation function. ho wever i n t he ht 7a4016 t he i nternal slope-compensation function eliminates the need for these exte rnal components resulting in a simplified application circuit design. os oscillator frequency tuning by choosing an appropriate value of external resistor between t he r t pi n a nd gnd, a sui table op erating frequency can be generated. the relationship between the r t value and the operating frequency is provided in figure 7. figure 7 rt resistor value vs. operating frequency
rev. 1.00 6 november 07, 2011 HT7A4016 gd vcc mf cs comp / fb gnd rt vref 2.2k 0.1 uf 470uf / 50v 10 1n 4148 20 0. 22 10 k irf 540 0. 22 1 nf 470 k 33pf hfb 20 hj 20 c 0.1 uf / 100 v 46uh 2k 40 k 470uf / 63 v 820 220pf vo = 55 v/ 75w v in = 24v figure 8 constant voltage boost application (dc-dc boost) multi-function pin a specially designed mixed-signal/analog interface is provided in the HT7A4016. by connecting the multi-function (mf) pin to dif ferent system sensing points, the HT7A4016 can be used for different circuit topologies such as isolation flyback or non-isolation dc-dc buck/boost. the mf pin can also be used as an l ed di mming pi n for buc k l ed dri ving. so me application c ircuit e xamples a re i ntroduced i n t he following pages. constant voltage boost application a constant v oltage (cv) boost application circuit is show n in figure 8. this circuit can be used with dc inputs of 16~24v and provides a dc output of 55v 5% with an output power level of 60~70w . the output power level can be changed by choosing a suitable inductor value and power mosfet , while the output voltage can be changed by choosing a suitable feedback resistor ratio. boost constant current (cc) led driver for back-light a boost cc led driver shown in figure 9 is designed for led backlight applications. the topology is similar to boost topologies, but the feedback point is changed from the v oltage output terminal to the current sense resistor . this circuit can be used with a dc input of 16~24v , for a dc output o f 5 5v a nd o utput p ower l evel o f 6 0~70w a t an output current level of 380ma 1% (16s10p). this circ uits constant current capa bility is more than that required by backlights and also good enough for led lighting applications. buck constant current led lighting driver a low cost buck constant current led lighting driver i s i ntroduced i n fi gure 10. unl ike t he usua l led drives which have a fi xed-voltage range and constant current control, this circui t can support very high out put vol tages, pe rhaps for hi gh l ed c ount serial configurations, with no maximum voltage limitations. here the mf pin can be used as a pwm dimming pin. constant voltage buck application a constant v oltage (cv ) buck (h igh-side buck) application circuit is shown in figure 1 1. this circuit can be used with dc inputs of 24v or higher voltage and p rovides a c onstant dc v oltage o utput. t he output power level can be changed by choosing a suitable inductor value, t ransformers turn ratio and power mosfet , while the output voltage can be changed by c hoosing a su itable fe edback re sistor ratio. primary side feedback, isolation flyback ac-dc converter the device can also can be used for isolation ac- dc appli cations. a typic al pri mary si de feedback, isolation flyback ac-dc converter is shown in figure 12.
